ASA Western Nationals
Lompoc Smashers
The Lompoc Smashers 12U All-Star softball team started early on day two in Milwaukie, Oregon.
After winning Monday's first pool 'D' game, 4-2 over the Oregon Fever, the Smashers defeated Elk Grove 5-2, in an 8 a.m. game on an artificial field.
Angelina Melgoza led the offense - rapping two hits and scoring from third on a wild pitch, while Sydney Townes singled in a run. The squad also collected hits from Jenna Grossini, Trista Berryman, Wendy Rubio and Ali Nelson, and RBI's from Nelson and Megan Green.
It was also a good day for the battery, starter Madison McNamee earned the win in four innings and helped her own cause with an RBI sacrifice bunt, before turning the circle over to Trista Berryman. Each pitcher registered a strikeout, while catcher Wendy Rubio, threw out a base-runner on a steal attempt and tagged a runner out at home on Nelson's throw from centerfield.
Championship bracket play begins today [Wed], but the Smashers 1st place performance in pool 'D' helped earn them a 1st round bye. They are scheduled to play Thursday at 6 pm against the winner of the Chaos / North Shore Gold match-up. Both of those squads were 3rd place finishers in their respective pools.
Championship Bracket play involved a lot of Gold for the Smashers. They began at 6 pm on Thursday with a 2-1 win over the North Shore Gold, but lost to the Moorpark Gold 2-0 on Friday (4pm).
The Lompoc Smashers scored twice in the first inning and played strong defense to hold on to their 2-1 victory over the North Shore Gold
Wendy Rubio's double scored Sydney Townes, who had walked, with Rubio advancing to third on an errant relay throw, and scoring when the throw went into the dugout.
Two doubles plays helped make the difference. In the first inning, Megan Bower made an outstanding snag of a line-drive, then threw to Madison McNamee for the second out. Later, in the sixth, with North Shore runners on second and third , Lexie Barbosa started the play with Rubio recording the second out at home plate. Trista Berryman struck out the final batter of the game to seal the win.
The Smashers were scheduled to play Moorpark at 4 p.m. on Friday in a second-round game. Moorpark defeated Orcutt 6-5 on Thursday.
The only baserunners for the Smashers in the Moorpark game were Trista Berryman on an error and a base hit, Jenna Grossini with a walk and base hit and Megan Green on an error. Both Moorpark runs were unearned and came in the second inning.
In the Friday nightcap (8pm), they struck down the Alameden Lightning 9-1.
Against the Lightning they took control early - with three runs in the first. Wendy Rubio had a two run double and Lexie Barbosa, pinch running for Rubio scored on a ground out by Jenna Grossini.
Berryman and Madison McNamee had two hits each, while Sydney Townes, Angelina Melgoza and Grossini all had a hit and an RBI.
McNamee was the winning pitcher and had six strikeouts in a game called after five innings with the mercy rule.
On Saturday, they still had a shot at the title - keeping the dream alive with an 11-5 9 am rout of the LGSGSA (Los Gatos) Magic. Melgoza, Rubio and Megan Bower each had hits and two RBIs, McNamee had a hit and an RBI and winning pitcher Berryman added a single.
Unfortunately, the curse of the Goldbug struck at 2pm as the girls fell 8-0 to the Chino Gold. Incidentally, Chino went on to play the Simi Valley Gold Diggers in the next round.
The Smashers finished in a ninth-place tie.
Lompoc Bombers
The Lompoc Bombers U10 softball team fell in its first game of pool play in Salem, Oregon Tuesday afternoon.
The Bombers 15-2 loss to La Mirada put them into to the pool 'D' third place game versus the Clackamas Cavs, 4-0 losers to the Half Moon Bay Waves, on Wednesday (3pm). The Bombers bounced back in that one, defeating the Cavs 11-2.
The pool play results will determine the seeding in the championship bracket.
Thursday is an off day. In addition to the bracket draw at 4 p.m., there is skills competition fundraiser for Play For The Cure.
One of the early favorites in the tourney is the WAGS [Westlake Village and Agoura Hills] Thunder, who defeated the San Bruno Storm 11-0 Wednesday to go undefeated in pool play after trouncing the Rocklin (Calif.) ThunderCats 13-0 on Tuesday's.
Playing three games on Friday, the Bombers got off to an early start with an 18-10 slug-fest win over the Newport Storm at 8 am. The noon game versus the Carmona Gold continued the hit-fest, but only for the Gold, as the Bombers fell 10-0.
