Frank Solich named his starting quarterback on Monday. Then in the next breath said his Bobcats would be using at least two signal callers in the season opener Saturday night.
USA Today Coninued the theme ...
INSIDE SLANT
The Bobcats have a starting quarterback, a chance at a BCS school at home, and the opportunity to prove last season's mistake-filled campaign was an aberration.
As senior quarterback Theo Scott said "It's time to shut up and play."
Scott will be under center as the starter when Ohio opens the 2009 season against visiting Connecticut on Sept 5. It's the second straight year he's held off senior Boo Jackson in training camp for the starter's role.
The Bobcats are hoping it works out better than last year. In '08, Scott was knocked out for the season in the second game and the 'Cats never recovered en route to a 4-8 finish.
With most of the essential personnel back on both sides of the ball, Ohio is hoping to avoid the turnovers and penalties that led to four losses by less than eight points last year.
"I think we learned what it takes," senior wideout Taylor Price said.
The 'Cats get a chance to show just that against the Huskies, a Big East power that piled up wins and bowl game berths the last five years. It's a rare chance for Ohio; a BCS conference school coming to its campus.
"We have a chance to show what we can do," Scott said. "We just have to do it."
So what does the 2009 Ohio U. Media Guide tell us about Boo's performance on the field ? ...
The Ohio offense was a juggernaut of sorts in 2008, setting school records in single season passing yards (2,795), single-season passing yards per game (232.9) and single season touchdown passes (21).
Individually, quarterback Boo Jackson stood out above the rest. He set school marks in single-season touchdown passes (19), single-season total offense (2,688), career completion percentage (60.5), career passing yards per attempt (7.7), career pass efficiency (137.75) and career total offense per play (6.62).
He also set a single-game school record for total offense when he piled up 413 yards in the home opener against Central Michigan.
Indivdually, junior quarterback Boo Jackson set school marks for passing touchdowns (19) and total offense (2,688). He also had 2,355 passing yards, which ranked second in the school’s single-season records. Jackson is also currently Ohio’s career leader
in completion percentage and pass effi ciency (min. 200 attempts) with his 60.5 completion percentage (185-306).
#8 Boo Jackson Highs
Pass Attempts: 42 at Northwestern (Sept. 20, 2008)
Completions: 27 at Northwestern (Sept. 20, 2008)
Yards: 365 vs. CMU (Sept. 13, 2008)
Long: 77 vs. CMU (Sept. 13, 2008)
Touchdowns: 5 vs. Akron (Nov. 22, 2008)
Carries: 14 at WMU (Oct. 4, 2008)
Yards: 70 vs. Buffalo (Oct. 28, 2008)
Long: 28 vs. Akron (Nov. 28, 2008)
Touchdowns: 1 twice
So you are starting Theo Scott because ... ?
Well Frank Solich is old school so maybe he feels that you shouldn't loose your spot to injury. Perhaps it has to do with Scott already having used his redshirt, while Boo still retains his. Still difficult to understand.
