Cabrillo High School grad Michael Coe followed up a good 1500 last week with a great race last Saturday at the Husky Invitational.
Last weekend, Coe ran a personal best 3:41.9 in the 1,500 meters [3:59 mile conversion] at an outdoor all-comers meet at University of California - Berkeley which he attends.
In Seattle, Coe finished a close second in the 3,000 meter run to Oklahoma State's freshman phenom, German Fernandez.
Coe's 7:48:05 shattered the all-time Cal Berkeley record, by eight seconds, and beat the Indoor National Championships automatic qualifying time (7:54) by six seconds. Coe's 3,000 meter time is the equivalent of an 8:27 two mile.
Both Coe, and fellow Californian, Fernandez broke the stadium record of 7:48:95. The only runner with a faster 3,000 meter time in the country this year is Oregon Olympian Galen Rupp, who posted a 7:44 two weeks ago.
Next up for Coe: in two weeks -Mount Pacific Indoor Championships [Seattle] Friday a mile leg of the Distance Medley Relay Saturday, the 3,000 meters in early March- National Indoor championships [Texas A&M]

Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships [Seattle, Wash.]
On Friday night Michael Coe [CHS] and his University of California teammates set new school and meet records in winning the distance medley relay in 9:29.71. Coe ran a 3:56.5 mile as the anchor leg.
The team also qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships at Texas A & M in two weeks, by substantially beating the automatic time (9:34.0) while posting the 3rd fastest medley relay event time in the nation this season.
Saturday, Coe overcame one of his personal bug-a-bears in the men's mile. He nipped his nemesis, Oregon's A.J. Acosta, at the tape by 1.7 seconds with a late surge, clocking in at 4:00.29.
Coe's plan for the IC's is similar to the league finals- Friday, March 13: anchor the distance medley relay team. Saturday, March 14: race in the 3000 meters (metric 2- mile).
The Distance Medley consists of four runners each running a relay leg - but of unequal length. The distances are, in order, 1200m (3 laps), 400m (1), 800 (2), and 1600m (4).
