CCS Long Course JO's 7/30/2009 - 8/02/2009NOTE: After morning Preliminaries, the top 8 advance to the 'A' Final, and the next 8 to the 'B' Final the evening of that same day.
THE WOMENWomen 13-14Paola HernandezThe Amazing Paola had her average type meet - 5 1sts, a 2nd, & 3 3rds in 9 events. Although she didn't win any freestyle events she mostly swam well against tough competition, and dominated the backstroke & IM races.
In the
50 Free she was third behind Taylor Solorio (Bakersfield) & Hannah Giles (Tule Nation), despite posting a very respectable 28.97. How respectable ? It was only 2 tenths off her PB (which still would have been 3rd) and was the 14th best of any age posted in the contest (her other time was 25th). Older swimmers Mariah Tharp (1,3,4) & Megan Eppler (2nd) had the fastest times, and each posted US Open qualifying times -- the only 3 US Open qualifiers of the entire meet. Solorio was 5th/17th & Giles 10th/27th on that list of 268.
In the
100 Free, Paola was seeded 2nd, won the Prelims, but was nipped by Solario in the finals. She did lower her PB by about a third of a second. She also took a quarter second off her
200 Free time, but finished behind #1 seed Jenna Corbin [Santa Maria] & Solario.
She then cruised through the
Backstroke events, winning the
100 by 2.5 seconds (2 sec. off her PB), and the
200 by 8 seconds while approaching her Personal Best [PB]. Her two 200 Back swims were the 2nd & 3rd fastest of the meet.
She won the
100 Butterfly in similar fashion - 2 seconds faster than 2nd place, 2 seconds off her PB, and the second fastest swim of the meet. The
200 was a different matter, however. Lindsey Hiltner [6.4] & Hailey Mastrup [1.68] (both of Santa Maria SC) joined Hernandez [4.12] in taking considerable time off their PB's for the 3rd, 4th, & 5th fastest swims in the meet.
The
IM events were a repeat of the Backstroke. Paola won the
200 by half a second (1.5 off her PB), and the 400 by half a second (3 sec off her PB). In the 400 prelims, the 2nd seed time was 12 seconds behind, and she won by 3 seconds (10 seconds off her PB). She posted the 5th (200) and 4th (400) fastest swims of the meet.
Women 11-12Samantha 'Sam' CarrollSam swam in 8 events and mostly did better in the morning prelims than in the evening finals, but she did qualify for the 'B' finals or better in all events.
